Shroud

Read . What it hides

One thing, well.

Shroud hides who received a payment. That is all it hides, and it does it with the standard Ethereum wallets already know. Everything else about a transaction stays as public as ever.

Hidden

  • The recipient. A stealth address is new and has no history. Without the viewing key nobody can tell whose it is.
  • That payments share a recipient. Every payment gets its own address, so ten payments to you look like ten strangers.
  • What your meta-address has received. Publishing it, or registering it, reveals no stealth address paid to it.

Public

  • The sender. The sending wallet is public, as on every Ethereum transaction. The sender also knows the stealth address they paid.
  • Amounts and the token. Amounts are public: they are in the Transfer event and the announcement.
  • Timing. When a payment arrives and when it moves on.

What links a stealth address to you

Each of these links them publicly and for good. The site warns before each one.

  • Funding its gas from your wallet. ETH from your wallet to a stealth address links the two. Use the ETH sent along with a payment, the stipend of a stealth buy, or a signature someone else submits.
  • Buying for yourself. A stealth buy comes from your wallet, so it links your wallet to that one stealth address. Payments others make to your meta-address do not.
  • Gathering. Moving several stealth addresses into one wallet links them all to that wallet, and to each other.
  • Submitting your own signed move from your main wallet. The submitter is public. Let someone else submit it.
  • Registering your meta-address. It links your wallet to your meta-address, not to any stealth address.
  • Amounts and timing. A payment of an unusual amount, moved on minutes later, can be matched by anyone patient.

What Shroud is not

Shroud is not a mixer. It holds no pool of deposits, it does not break the link between a sender and their own transaction, and it does not make anyone anonymous. It is the stealth address standard, EIP-5564, applied to one token and its pool. Use it within the law that applies to you.

Where your keys are

Only in this page. They are made from a signature in your browser and kept in memory, or in this tab's session storage if you ask. There is no server: the site is static files reading Ethereum through public RPCs. Whoever holds your spending key, or the signature it was made from, can spend what is paid to you, so sign the key message only on this site.
